Vedic Astrology
for Beginners

A complete introduction to Jyotish — the ancient Indian science of light. No prior knowledge needed.

How to Get Started

1

Get Your Birth Data

You need three things: exact date of birth, time of birth (as precise as possible — check your birth certificate), and place of birth (city and country).

2

Calculate Your Chart

Use the free Birth Chart tool on this site. Your chart shows the position of all 9 grahas (planets) across 12 houses at the exact moment of your birth.

3

Find Your Lagna (Ascendant)

Your Lagna — or rising sign — is the most important point in Vedic astrology. It determines the layout of all 12 houses and is calculated from your birth time.

4

Note Your Moon Sign

Your Moon sign in Vedic astrology often feels more accurate than your Sun sign. The Moon governs mind, emotions, instinct, and your inner psychological nature.

5

Find Your Current Dasha

The Dasha system tells you which planetary period you're in right now. This is Jyotish's most powerful timing tool — it governs what major life themes are active.

6

Book a Reading

A trained Jyotishi can synthesise all of this into a coherent, personalised picture. One good reading is worth months of self-study for new students.

Common Myths — Busted

✗ Myth: Vedic astrology is the same as Western astrology
✓ Reality: No — they use different zodiacs (sidereal vs tropical), different techniques, and different emphases. Your Vedic sun sign is usually 1–2 signs different from your Western sun sign.
✗ Myth: It tells you your fixed fate
✓ Reality: Jyotish reveals tendencies, timing, and karma — not fixed outcomes. Free will operates within the karmic framework the chart describes.
✗ Myth: You need to be Hindu or Indian to benefit
✓ Reality: Jyotish is a universal system. Students from every cultural and religious background find value in it.
✗ Myth: It's only useful for predictions
✓ Reality: While timing predictions are a major feature, Jyotish is equally powerful as a tool for self-understanding, vocational clarity, and relationship insight.
